Structural Glazing Explained — The Frameless Glass Façade

How a structural-glazed façade works — glass bonded to the frame with structural silicone for an almost frameless face, the minimal sightlines it gives, and the quality assurance that keeps a bonded glass wall safe over its life. For Ghana.

What Structural Glazing Is

Structural glazing is a curtain wall in which the glass is bonded to the frame with structural silicone rather than held in place by visible pressure caps. From outside, the façade reads as an almost frameless sheet of glass — the aluminium that carries it sits behind the glass line, out of sight. It is the system specifiers reach for when they want a flush, high-end glass face on a prime corporate building, hotel or bank.

How a Bonded Glass Façade Works

In a conventional (capped) curtain wall, pressure plates and caps clamp the glass to the frame, and you see those caps as lines across the façade. In structural glazing, that mechanical capping is replaced — wholly or partly — by a structural silicone bond between the glass and the aluminium carrier frame.

Four-Sided vs Two-Sided

  • Four-sided structural glazing bonds the glass on all four edges, giving the fully flush, frameless face with no visible aluminium at all.
  • Two-sided structural glazing bonds two opposing edges and mechanically caps the other two, giving strong vertical or horizontal sightlines while still reading cleaner than a fully capped wall.

Minimal Sightlines

Because the glass is bonded rather than clamped, the visible joint between panes can be reduced to a slim silicone weather-seal line. The result is the deep, continuous glass appearance — minimal sightlines, maximum glass — that distinguishes a structural-glazed tower from a capped one. It can be built as a stick or a unitised system.


The Silicone Bond Carries Load — So QA Is Everything

In a structural-glazed façade the silicone is not just a weather seal; the structural silicone carries the wind load from the glass back into the frame. Quality Assurance on the Bond

  • AAMA structural-silicone guidance governs the joint design, bite (bond width) and glueline thickness, sized to the glass area and wind load.
  • Substrate preparation — the aluminium and glass surfaces are cleaned and primed to the silicone manufacturer’s specification before bonding; a contaminated surface is the most common cause of a failed bond.
  • Factory bonding where possible — bonding under controlled factory conditions (as on a unitised panel) gives more reliable adhesion than site bonding, which is sensitive to dust, humidity and temperature.
  • Adhesion and cure testing — sample bonds are checked for full cure and adhesion before panels are accepted, so a weak batch is caught before it reaches the building.

Performance — Tested, Not Assumed

A structural-glazed façade is verified against the same performance standards as any other curtain wall: air leakage to ASTM E283, water penetration to ASTM E331, structural wind load to ASTM E330, and field water and inter-storey-drift testing to the AAMA 501 family, with fabrication to EN 1090 execution discipline. Frequently Asked Questions

Is structural glazing safe if the glass is only held by silicone? Yes, when it is engineered and quality-assured properly. Structural silicone is a load-carrying material with a long track record in façades, and the bond is sized to the glass area and wind load to AAMA guidance. The risk is not the principle but a poorly prepared or poorly cured bond — which is exactly what the QA discipline (substrate preparation, factory bonding, adhesion and cure testing) exists to prevent.

What is the difference between structural glazing and a normal curtain wall? In a normal (capped) curtain wall the glass is held by visible pressure caps that read as lines on the façade. In structural glazing the glass is bonded to the frame with structural silicone, so the façade reads as an almost frameless sheet of glass. Structural glazing gives a flush premium face at a higher price; a capped wall is simpler, easier to re-glaze and lower-priced.

Can structural glazing be built as a unitised system? Yes. Structural glazing describes how the glass is fixed (bonded, not capped); stick and unitised describe how the wall is built. The two combine — a unitised structural-glazed panel is bonded in the factory under controlled conditions, which is the most reliable way to achieve the bond.
