What Is a Ventilated Rainscreen Façade? A Plain-Language Guide for Ghana

The Problem a Rainscreen Is Built to Solve

If you own a solid-wall building in Accra — a bank block from the nineties, an institutional headquarters, a re-clad apartment tower — you have probably met the same enemy twice a year. The rains arrive, the wall takes water at the face, and a few weeks later you are looking at staining, blistered paint, or damp pushing through to the inside finish. Painting over it buys a season. The water comes back.

A ventilated rainscreen is the engineered answer to that problem. Instead of asking one sealed surface to keep every drop out, it splits the job into two parts and lets physics do most of the work.

How a Ventilated Rainscreen Actually Works

The principle is older than it sounds, and it is genuinely different from a curtain wall, which keeps water out at the glazed face. A rainscreen accepts that a little water will always get past an outer panel — and gives that water somewhere to go.

The outer skin

An outer cladding panel — aluminium composite (ACP), ceramic, terracotta, fibre-cement, or stone — is hung clear of the building on a bracket-and-rail support system. This skin sheds the overwhelming majority of driving rain straight back off the building.

The ventilated cavity

Behind that skin sits an open, drained gap — usually 25mm to 50mm. Any water that does get past the joints runs down the back of the panel and drains out at the bottom. Just as importantly, air moves through the cavity, so the back of the panel and the face of the inner wall dry between downpours rather than staying wet.

The insulated inner wall

The real weatherline is the inner wall — the existing solid wall plus a waterproofing layer and, usually, insulation. Because the outer skin and the cavity have already taken the punishment, this layer stays dry and the building’s thermal performance improves at the same time.

When a Rainscreen Is the Right Call in Ghana

Honesty first: a rainscreen is not the answer to every façade. It earns its place in specific situations.

If your elevation is a fully glazed, framed skin, you are usually looking at a curtain wall, not a rainscreen — different problem, different system.

The Honest Cost Picture

A rainscreen is a system, not a coat of paint, and it is priced like one. The cost is driven mostly by the outer panel you choose — ACP sits at the accessible end, while terracotta, ceramic and natural stone climb from there — plus the support framing, insulation, and access for installation. We will never quote you a rainscreen as a budget fix, because it is not one. What it is, is a wall that stops the twice-a-year repaint cycle and the slow internal damage that comes with it, which is where the real money was going all along.

A rainscreen only works if the cavity drains, the brackets carry the wind load, and the fire performance of the skin is correct for the building. We engineer the whole assembly — brackets, rails, cavity, drainage and panel — as one system, and we test the installed wall for water penetration where the specification calls for it. The standards that govern this work are real and we hold to them: structural performance under wind load is verified to ASTM E330, and execution of the aluminium support structure follows EN 1090.
