The Look Everyone Recognises, Even If They Can’t Name It
Walk into the lobby of a serious corporate headquarters or a flagship bank in Accra and you have probably seen it without knowing the term: a wall of glass that seems to float with no frame around it, the panes held by small, polished steel fittings at their corners. That is spider glazing — and it is one of the few façade decisions whose entire purpose is the impression it makes on the person walking through the door.
It is also a system that gets specified for the wrong reasons as often as the right ones. This is an honest look at how it works and when it is genuinely worth its premium.
How Spider Glazing Actually Works
The defining idea is that the glass carries the load through point fixings, not through a continuous frame around its edges.
The spider fittings
At the corners where panes meet, a stainless-steel fitting — the “spider,” named for its arms — clamps through holes drilled in the glass and holds the panes in place. Because the connection is a small point rather than a full frame, the glass reads as an almost uninterrupted sheet.
The support behind the glass
The spiders themselves have to be held by something stiff enough to resist wind load without flexing. That support is usually a glass fin, a steel structure, or a tension cable or rod system, sitting behind the glass line so it stays visually quiet. The choice of support is where most of the engineering — and most of the cost — actually lives.
Toughened, drilled glass
The glass is structurally toughened and drilled precisely for the fittings. Once drilled and toughened it cannot be cut or altered, so the setting-out has to be exactly right before fabrication — there is no adjusting a hole on site.
Where It Earns Its Premium in Ghana
Spider glazing is a statement system, and it pays back where the statement matters.
- Corporate and institutional entrances. A headquarters lobby, a bank’s banking hall, a flagship reception — places where the architecture is meant to signal permanence and quality the moment you arrive.
- Double-height atria and showcase volumes. Tall, open entrance spaces where a framed system would clutter the glass and a frameless wall lets the volume read cleanly.
- Buildings where the entrance is the brand. When the front door is doing real reputational work, the cost of spider glazing buys something the rest of the façade cannot.
The Honest Verdict — And Where to Choose Differently
Here is the part a brochure will not tell you. Spider glazing is a premium system: the drilled toughened glass, the stainless fittings and the fin or cable support all cost more than a conventional glazed wall, and it is less forgiving to detail and to maintain. That premium is well spent on a genuine statement entrance — and wasted on a back elevation, a standard storefront, or a building where nobody is paying attention to the door. For most of a building’s glazed area, a structural glazing face or a conventional curtain wall does the job at a fairer price.
